what mental coaching is in esports

what rules are in order
So what is it exactly?
Mental training (training - you train, coaching, a coach runs the process) is, well, simply training. Just skills you train are mental. It's pretty self-explanatory. In s[ports theory we use a table metaphor. A table needs to have 4 legs to be stable. These legs are groups of skills: mechanical/physical, technical, tactical and mental. Here we learn mental. A bit less clear it may be what mental skills actually are. Let me give you some examples: emotion regulation, concentration, confidence, communication (including self-talk), self-awareness, time management, planning, goal setting. They're also called soft skills (because, contrary to hard skills, cannot really be measured objectively). In my work ethic together with a client we train the skills above by and with playing the game of choice. Both in the context of more effective training game-wise but also in the context of trasfering these skills to life. So we can say that we use the esport game to actually boost overall life skills. I consider this pretty useful, really.
So how does it look like?
To start with it's not some random guy telling you how to live. I generally try to speak no more than 30% of the session, not to preach, judge, lecture on theory (ok, a bit maybe). This is what I don't do. So what do I do? I speak with a player to together work out solutions to face the challenges a player faces. In my line of work very important is getting to know a client as a person in the first place, as an athlete secondly. and establishing rapport. I assume a player is an expert in their game, so I don't give strictly gaming advice like META, picks, tactics, mechanics. There are tutorials and coaches for that, important, useful, just not from me. Sometimes I suggest possible solutions for e. g. goal setting, practice sessions organisation, introducing mental training in gaming sessions, attitude or reacting in challenging situations. And everything is to gradually improve client's autonomy, I really like the idea "go, try this, see if it works for you, come back in a week and tell me what happened". From time to time I also give exercises (like homework) to simply train concrete skills that a given player decides to practice in the future.
What rules are in order?
To make this process of mental coaching effective we need to follow some rules. Otherwise it simply won't work. This is how the world is made, nothing I can do.
- First and foremost you need consistency. First session nicely inspires but in the long run to change certain habits and acquire skills you need to come for a few months weekly and implement everything we discuss in your training sessions, do exercises, do homework. We work, we practice. It won't be done just by itself.
- We name each other by name or nickname. It's just easier.
- The training's purpose is to increase your level of mental skills. During the first meeting we usually precisely define what we mean by this, how we are going to measure it based on what you want to improve.
- During online meeting we have a camera on.
- During online meetings don't play any games, limit all external noises, be in the place where you can talk undisturbed and focus on the session.
- As a psychologist I am bound by professional confidentiality so I don't share with anyone what we cover during sessions (unless you ask me to)
- Notes, I take notes, i encourage you to take notes. Notes are completely OP no matter the game, no matter the META. In life too.
- There are no things obvious, please describe your reality as precisely as you can, leave no space for guessing.
- You have a right to refuse to take part in an exercise or answer a question. When this happens, we just move further. Sometimes I can ask why.
- Underage player must have parents' agreement for cooperation.
- A session cancelled less than 48 hours before scheduled time is fully paid.
- Let's be puunctual
